After discussing Chinese cultural history, visit Xi’an’s unparalleled Museum of History and the world-famous terracotta horses and warriors found in a Qin Emperor’s tomb. A campus excursion and lunch with university students illuminates contemporary Chinese lives.

Fly to Dali 1 nights
Visit the Kunming Institute of Music and Fine Arts for a demonstration of Chinese music. Stroll through the old city of Dali and explore an island temple, a fishing village and an elegant trio of Tang Dynasty pagodas on a boating excursion. Meet villagers in their homes, view a special Bai dance performance and take part in the “Three Tastes of Tea” ceremony.

In one of the best-preserved cities in all of China, discover the rich Naxi history at a small country village that was home to Joseph Rock and enjoy a concert of Daoist music by Naxi elders. At Chengdu’s Panda Institute, discover the history and habitat of this endearing and endangered species.

Tibet University faculty discusses Tibet’s traditions and contemporary life, demonstrate thangka painting and illuminate texts at the University Library. Explore the revered Jokhong Temple, a traditional medicine hospital, the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace and the magnificent Drepong Monastery that once housed 10,000 lamas.

Board Yangtze River study cruise 3 nights
After exploring the Ming residences and tea houses of Chongqing, embark at the Yangtze waterfront. Visit river towns and the Three Gorges Dam and pass through exquisite narrow gorges of a Yangtze tributary aboard traditional boats.

the wall 3-mDay 3: Great Wall/Sacred Way/Tian’anmen Square/ Peking Duck
(Monday)
Breakfast: Hotel buffet.
Morning: This morning visit the Great Wall. As you walk the Wall in the mountains outside Beijing, enjoy glorious vistas of the Wall as it climbs and cascades over the distant mountains.
Lunch: at a restaurant nearby the Wall
Afternoon: On your way back to Beijing visit the Sacred Way, the entrance alley to the Ming Tombs and also known as the Alley of Animals because of the monumental animal sculptures that line the way. (We won’t enter the Tombs themselves as all artifacts have been removed.) Before returning to your hotel stop at Tian’anmen Square.
Dinner: Celebrate with a Beijing specialty: Peking Duck dinner.
Evening:Join your group leader to learn some useful Chinese phrases.

Day 4: Hutongs/Family Lunch/University Talk/Beijing Opera
(Tuesday)
Breakfast: After tai ji exercise beside our hotel, enjoy a buffet breakfast.
Morning: Explore ‘hutongs’ (residential lanes and alleys) near Beihai Park. Visit the former residence of Song Qing Ling (political activist and wife of Dr. Sun Yat Sen) and families in their courtyard homes.
Lunch: Lunch is hosted by local families.
Afternoon: Coach to Beijing Normal University for a Talk: China’s Land and Peoples. Following that, enjoy a brief tour of their campus.
Dinner: at nearby hotel
Evening: At a nearby theater, enjoy a taste of Beijing opera, a unique art form that uses brilliant costumes, mannerized make-up, acrobatics and martial arts, various types of falsetto singing, and exuberant percussionists. The performance is presented with English and modern Chinese supertitles above the stage. Chinese Opera is an ‘acquired taste’ for Western ears. For an introduction to Beijing Opera and its traditions, try to see the film ‘Farewell My Concubine.’

erhai-mDay 10: Shaping Market/Three Pagodas/Three Tastes of Tea
(Monday)
Breakfast: Practice tai ji before hotel's buffet breakfast.
Morning: This morning, take an early flight of about 30 minutes to the town of Dali and explore the traditional Bai people's market at Shaping. This huge weekly market is one of China's most exciting with brilliantly clad women and children selling local produce, hand-made artifacts and cloth (both old and new). As well, itinerant dentists and barbers ply their trade along with bakers and vendors of local traditional hardware. Stop off at a local tie-dye workshop before lunching at Bai courtyard restaurant.
Lunch: Lunch at Bai restaurant.
Afternoon: On the way back to your hotel, stop at the elegant 9th century Three Pagodas. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Feel free to drop off at Dali center or continue back to your hotel.

(Tuesday)

Morning: Leave early for Lake Erhai port to take a boat to Guanyin Temple. Travel along the opposite shore of Lake Erhai where you can explore an ancient Bai fishing village. Instead of staying on the main street, be sure to explore the back alleys and lanes. Most families will welcome you to step into their courtyards for a look. Often, there will be horses and livestock there too.

Afternoon: After lunch, take a coach to the town of Lijiang.

Evening: Watch 'Beyond the Clouds,' the award-winning British documentary on life in Lijiang.

Lunch: lunch of your own choosing; there are restaurants in the center of town with English menus. Or join your national guide where he/she will have lunch.
Afternoon: Take the afternoon at your leisure or depart from hotel for Yuhu Village, former home of anthropologist and horticulturalist, Joseph Rock. We’ll explore the village and visit Rock’s home, now a small museum.

Day 14: Panda Institute; fly to Lhasa: ‘Tibetan Life’/ Norbulingka
(Friday)

Morning: This morning, fly to Lhasa, capital of Tibet. On the way to the airport stop at Chengdu Panda Research Institute and hope to be there during the pandas’ feeding time (when they are most active). Pandas an endangered species are indigenous to the province of Szechuan only.
Lunch: En route.
Afternoon: Later this afternoon, visit Tibet University; after a Talk which introduces Tibetan Life, take a short tour of the university; then visit Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama which contains his residential quarters. (Note that although Tibet uses ‘Beijing time,’ it is actually about 2 hours ‘later’ than Beijing.)

potala_frontDay 15: Jokhang Temple/Bokhor Bazaar/Tibet Museum/Thangka Painting
(Saturday)
Breakfast: hotel buffet. (because of altitude, we will not practice tai ji in Lhasa)
Morning: Explore the heart of Lhasa, Jokhang Temple, the most revered temple in Tibet dating from the 7th century. Pilgrims come from all of Tibet, some walking for years, to worship here. Surrounding the Temple, the Bokhor Bazaar offers an exciting array of Tibetan goods both old and new -- tools, fabric, thangkas, jewelry, and yak hides.
Lunch: At a restaurant overlooking the Bokhor and that serves Tibetan and international dishes.
Afternoon: After lunch, explore the Tibet Museum, home to a rich collection of cultural relics, antique thangkas, scriptures, costumes, and folk art.
Dinner: At hotel dining room.
Evening: Learn about traditional Thangka painting (Tibetan religious scrolls) through a talk and demonstration by a Master at Tibet University.

Morning: Travel to Nomadic grasslands beyond Lhasa where pastoral families raise yak, sheep, goats and horses. If it is grazing season, visit with nomadic families and then observe Tibetan rural life in a small village. Visit its primary school and meet with its dedicated director.
Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch in this pastoral landscape.
Afternoon: Continue to explore this very small and natural village. On the way back to Lhasa, stop at the city's Traditional Tibetan Medicine Hospital. For those who would like to continue on to your hotel, feel free to do so.

Afternoon: This afternoon, stroll on the Bund, Shanghai's Huangpu River promenade, to view the busy river activity and the iconic art deco and neo-classic buildings dating from the time of 'foreign concessions' in Shanghai.
