Airline Regulations

icon_planeEven if you have a visa to China (or maybe you do not need a visa) your airline might refuse to allow you to board.  This is because airlines face penalties from governments if passengers are not eligible for entry to a country and they are also responsible for carrying them out again.  Ge…

Visa Cancellation

At any time, the PSB Exit and Entry Administration can cancel your visa or residence permit.  Of course, this is unusual and would occur only if you are deemed not to be complying with regulations relating to the visa or you have broken Chinese law.  If the offence is serious enough you could be expelled under escort by the police, but for lesser situations you are normally allowed 7 days to exit the mainland or if you don't already have one, granted a 7 day tourist visa, to enable you to organise and exit China.

A common issue is that when you have entered China on a Z or X visa but later leave your employment or studies, you are not entitled to remain in China on that visa.  The organisation you were associated with is supposed to notify the PSB that you are no longer with them and you should apply for a new visa, most likely a tourist (L) visa.

If you do not seek a new visa and the PSB has been notified of the situation, you will probably have no trouble until you seek to leave the country.  Then you might be considered to have overstayed your visa.

Visa Exemption

China has mutual visa-free agreements with some foreign countries, but they are mainly for diplomatic, service or official passport holders and only allow the duration of stay less than 30 days.

The truly transit passengers who hold onward tickets do not require a visa  provided that they stay in the transit area and depart within 24 hours.

Citizens of Singapore, Brunei and Japan are allowed to enter China without visas for up to 15 days for tourism, including visiting family or friends, or minor business purposes provided they enter through nominated international ports.

Citizens of the following 20 countries are permitted to remain in the Pudong airport, sea port or enter into Shanghai City without a visa, for 48 hours: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Republic of Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, USA.

Citizens of the following 26 countries are exempt from visa requirements when they travel to Hainan Province as a group organised by International Travel Agencies that have been set up and registered in Hainan Province.  The stay is limited to 21 days and travelers are not allowed to leave Hainan: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakstan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand, USA and Ukraine. The tours organized by travel agencies of South Korea, Germany and Russia can have two members each group.

Foreign travellers travelling to Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions (SAR) in tour groups organized by travel agencies registered in these SARs are exempt from visa requirements for entry to limited areas of Guangdong province for up to 6 days when entering via nominated ports.

Chinese citizens including citizens of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are allowed to enter China without visas but they still require passports or other travel documents such as a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwanese.
